Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership

The Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership is a nationally recognised qualification that introduces young people to the principles of leadership through sport and physical activity. It is designed to develop essential life skills such as communication, teamwork, organisation, and responsibility, all through engaging, practical learning.

Who Is It For?

The course is ideal for:

  • Young people aged 13 to 17
  • Anyone interested in coaching, sport, or volunteering

No prior leadership or coaching experience is needed. Just a positive attitude and a willingness to get involved!

Course Format

  • Duration: Approx. 6–10 hours (flexible based on local delivery)
  • Assessment: No written exam — assessment is practical.
  • Certification: Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership from Leadership Skills Foundation.

What Does the Course Cover?

Participants will learn how to:

  • Plan, lead and evaluate safe and fun activity sessions
  • Communicate effectively with individuals and groups
  • Use leadership skills in practical sports settings
  • Understand the role of a sports leader in the community
  • Support others in physical activity, including peers and younger children

TrY Sports Leadership Programme

The TrY Sports Leadership Programme is an engaging, practical course for Transition Year students across Co. Louth. Delivered by Louth Local Sports Partnership, the programme introduces leadership skills through sport and physical activity, giving young people the confidence and tools to lead in their schools and communities.

What Is It?

This programme leads to the Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership, a nationally recognised qualification that introduces students to the fundamentals of leading fun, safe, and inclusive activity sessions. It focuses on developing:

  • Confidence and communication
  • Planning and organisational skills
  • Teamwork and problem-solving
  • Empathy and inclusion

Who Can Take Part?

The programme is open to:

  • Transition Year students in participating secondary schools in Louth

No prior coaching or sporting experience is needed — just a willingness to get involved and learn!

What’s Involved?

The course includes:

  • 4 hours of practical, activity-based learning
  • Leadership skill-building through sport and games
  • Opportunities to plan and deliver mini sessions
  • Focus on inclusion, communication, and safety.

All participants who complete the course receive a TrY Sports Leadership Certificate from Louth LSP.
