National Play Day

The aim of National Play Day is to promote play (and recreation) opportunities for children and young people all across the country. Through this initiative, Louth Local Sports Partnership apply for funding to the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration & Youth and manage applications on behalf of Louth County Council.

National Playday written in colourful and cartoon letters.

The National Play Day is just one component of the wider Summer of Play campaign; a government-led initiative designed to remind everyone, young and old, of the fundamental importance of play. Last year’s theme was “All play together”.

In previous years the following initiatives have been run in Louth:

  • Kite building packs & kite flying events and workshops for families
  • Skipping packs and tutorial workshops for families
  • Support scheme for Pre-schools & early years child care
  • Training day and equipment packs for pre-schools, early years child care & creches

Every year National Play Day is run during the first week in July. As soon as information is available on the dates and planned events for 2026 it will be available on our website.

Daily Mile Lú

Daily Mile Lú encourages children to be active during the school day supported by their teachers and parents. Our resource is available to schools in both English and Irish languages in every classroom in every primary school in Louth.

The children are encouraged to take part in 15 minutes of exercise every day by simply jogging, walking, hopping, pushing or just simply moving, they then record their activity on their Daily Mile Lú wall chart in their classroom.

For more information on this programme please contact Louth Local Sports Partnership on 042-9324318 or email Louthlsp@louthcoco.ie.

Primary School Programmes

Louth Local Sports Partnership provides a variety of programmes and support to encourage Primary Schools to get more active more often. Our mission is to provide teachers, parents, and children with the knowledge and resources to stay active, offer educational opportunities through teacher training, and organise a range of programmes throughout the year.

Over the course of the year we offer a school’s basketball programme, playground stencils programme, and Daily Mile Lú resources as well as providing support to schools during Active Schools week and European Week of Sport.
